Inspection, cleaning &
maintenance of pipelines

Pipelines are the lifelines of the energy age: They transport hydrogen, natural gas and oil in pipes millions of kilometres long and often across the borders of countries and continents. Before the pipelines are put into operation, the absolute safety of every metre of pipeline must be guaranteed.

Cleaning of pipelines

During the installation and operation of kilometre-long pipeline networks, contamination in the pipes can hardly be avoided. Depending on the type of pipeline, degree of soiling and cleaning objective, we use mechanical, chemical or combined processes that can passivate the inner wall at the same time. Cleaning scraper developed in-house are used for this purpose: Scrapers with discs or brushes remove impurities; magnetic scarpers remove metal chips.

Pressure testing of pipelines

Before pipelines are commissioned, for example after new construction or transition, we certify pipeline safety by means of pressure tests that reveal weak points right down to the material structure. According to country-specific requirements, the pipelines are filled with water, air or nitrogen in order to analyse pressure resistance, tightness and strength. If necessary, we use supplementary stress tests to check the pipeline integrity under extreme conditions.

Intelligent pigging

Even the smallest deformations, cracks and corrosion in pipelines can have serious consequences for people and the environment. Geometric circumferential measurement with our proprietary GPI - tool, an electronic caliper scraper,

enables deformations to be detected. In collaboration with long-standing partners and their intelligent pigs, we also measure and analyse the corrosion of pipelines, using the magnetic flux leakage method (MFL) and ultrasonic among other methods.
